CAMPSITE INFORMATION

Camping space at GWW has been reserved through the Land Allocation system during Pre-Reg.
Registered camps have their spaces marked out and labeled on site. The locations can be found on the map at Gate and at the Headquarters Tent (located on Merchant’s Row).

Reservations will be held until 6pm on Friday evening, at which point any unoccupied space will become available for general camping. Open space will be available for general camping; just be aware that setting up in (or extending an existing camp into) a reserved space will gain you a visit from our friendly Constabulary.

Continued unwillingness to respect other campers’ reservations or camp space is grounds for removal from site without refund.

Greetings on behalf of the Constabulary of Caid. We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable war. We ask that you observe a few simple guidelines to help everybody enjoy this war all the more.

Be respectful of the facilities
Please demonstrate to the park staff the courtesy and responsibility for which the SCA is famous — be mindful of any instructions given to you by the rangers and leave the park grounds clean and undamaged.

Be courteous to your neighbors
Remember that we are all here to accomplish the same task: Having an enjoyable and successful war. There
are a variety of ways in which we all do this. We ask that you be mindful of others in pursuit of your own fun.
Please be courteous to your neighbors, particularly in regard to noise. Don’t forget to ask permission before
entering or walking through someone else’s camp. Often, a little forethought will not only keep your
neighbors happy, but it might even give you some assistance in your efforts!
Please help the war effort

We Constables of Caid invite you to join us on patrols if you have the desire. We spend our evenings strolling from camp to camp, meeting new friends and helping people in need of assistance. Any help in our service of the Dream and the war will be greatly appreciated.

And if you find the duties of a Constable suit you, pleasemake sure to volunteer! The constable shift lead can provide on the job training.

Be considerate. If you are photographing individuals, please ensure that they are willing to be photographed.

If you are photographing camp sites other than your own, ask permission first.

When filming on the battlefield, you MUST stay out of the line of battle and behind the marshals.

Do not photograph or film children other than your own without the parents’ express permission, preferably
written permission. Do not post images of children other than your own on any social media site, including
YouTube.

If you plan to post pictures or video on Facebook or YouTube, make sure you have the permission of those you photographed; this legally protects you. The official SCA photo model release form can be found at http://sca.org/docs/pdf/ReleaseModelFillable.pdf.

Remember, images on social media sites can end up anywhere. For additional official information on photography and filming at SCA events, see http://www.sca.org/officers/media/filmcrewrules.html.

Verbiage taken and modified from https://www.gulfwars.org/drone-policy/

A drone is defined by the FAA as, “An unmanned aircraft system (UAS), sometimes called a drone, is an aircraft without a human pilot onboard – instead, the UAS is controlled from an operator on the ground. (Drone Defined Public Law 112-93 Section 331 (8))

Be aware that the FAA does regulate the flying of drones within the United States and it is your responsibility
as the pilot and the owner of the drone to understand and abide by the rules. Any questions regarding the FAA rules should be submitted to the FAA.

In order to ensure the safety of all guests at GWW, drones are not all allowed on the property except by
commercial media with the expressed written permission of the GWW Media Coordinator. Please see the
website for details (www.caid-gww.org).

FURTHER:
● The pilot must comply with all FAA regulations.

● Drones MUST NOT be flown over or near any emergency occurring on site.

● The pilot and owner must be aware of FAA Airspace Restrictions and respect privacy. Drones arerestricted from use in any camping area, but request may be made for flyovers of public areas namely, battlefields, court, marketplace, and roads. Please see the GWW Media Coordinator for a listing of all approved locations.

● Any drone pilot or owner of a drone violating any FAA rules or regulations, or the rules laid out in this
Policy & Procedure for Drone Use at GWW will be immediately reported to the FAA for action and
removed from site without a refund.

● Anyone not having written permission from GWW Media Coordinator who flies a drone on site may be
removed by the GWW Stewards or the Kingdom Seneschal without a refund.

● Please note, the drone (owner/operator) is liable for any and all damages to persons, property, and
any litigation arising from the use of drones or UASs operating at GWW.

Well Met! I look forward to Great Western War just like everybody else every year. As such, part of the annual requirements are fire extinguishers that need to be located in camp.

As a Fire Prevention Technician and Fire Extinguisher Service provider, I recommend that this be a 5lb ABC multi-purpose fire extinguisher. This is a medium sized household fire extinguisher for personal use that can be bought at just about any Home Depot, Lowe’s, or any other large store chain like Walmart. The reason is because of the fire ratings that come with these extinguishers. Initially, this may not mean much, but to someone in the know these letters and numbers mean something specific.

A 5lb ABC fire extinguisher has a “3-A, 40BC” rating. What this means is that when properly applied, it will extinguish 3 cubic yards of flaming “Ordinary Combustible” material aka Class A fire. It can also be used to extinguish up to 40 square feet of flammable/combustible liquid fire aka Class B.

It’s also a non-conductive extinguishing agent which makes it suitable for Class C fires which is any fire that involves energized equipment. In addition, and most importantly, it also means the average person will be able to handle a sizable incipient stage fire should one start in camp and rules are being followed about minding actively burning fires/open flames.

Simply remember to employ the PASS method for usage. That is Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep. Pull the pin. Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire. Squeeze the handle, and apply the agent in a side to side Sweeping motion aimed at the base of the fire. I hope this helps, and I hope you all have a safe and wonderful war.

I’ll see you around the event!     Yours in Service,    Sigvaldr

There are water sources throughout the site to be shared by campers. Hoses will be attached to the spigots at the drinking fountains throughout the park to be used for filling your containers. Please be considerate of other campers’ water needs and do not block access to the water spigots with tents, vehicles or equipment. Please be polite and drought conscious: don’t leave the water running to flood the area around the spigots.

Vendors bring Ice and Firewood for sale through Headquarters. See Headquarters on site at the event for pricing and delivery schedules.

No ground fires will be allowed. All fires must be in an elevated brazier. Braziers must be 10-12 inches above the ground and they must be stable.
No open flames in tents.
Campfires, torches, and candles may not be left unattended at any time. Constable patrols are authorized to enter empty camps and extinguish open or unattended fires.
Tiki torches are prohibited.
At least one (1) fire extinguisher is required for each tent or RV. Please keep a fire extinguisher or a bucket of sand or water and a spade in plain view next to any brazier in use. All kitchens should have at least one fire extinguisher nearby.
Do not throw flammable liquids on fires. All fuel for flame-powered devices should be handled according to the safety instructions on the containers. Liquid fuels should be stored and transported in their original container or other state-approved container.
No Fire play (Juggling, Twirling, etc) is allowed on site.
Unattended cooking fires or stoves, lamps, or lanterns are not allowed and will be extinguished if found unattended.
All fires must be extinguished before going to bed.
In the event of a fire, use extinguishers and immediately send for GWW Constabulary.
Fire rules may change at any time due to fire danger and all changes are to be immediately followed.

If your brought it, PLEASE plan on taking it home.

Broken camp equipment/furniture must be removed from site by owner (eg. mattresses, chairs, futons, fire-pits, coolers and tents). Please do not place them in the dumpsters.

Trash will be picked up twice a day by the trash crew. Once in the morning and once before nightfall. Actual times will vary so we are not singing our lovely trash song over the roar of court.

The trash crew is not worth robbing as they carry no more than $20 cash on them at any time.

Trash must be kept in your camp until a trash truck comes by to pick it up.  You may take trash directly to the dumpster.

Coals must be placed in the assigned location.

Please try to avoid making trash piles along the road or we will make your camp the designated location for all future trash deliveries. It would be greatly appreciated if you did not overfill your trash bags and please tie them shut (flies are an issue).

Blue trash bags are for recycling.  if you put regular trash in blue trash bags a para-military Greenpeace team will halo jump into your camp and beat you with faux-wood baseball bats.

The last trash pick up will be monday morning 1 hour before site closes.  All trash after this must be taken to the dumpster or removed from site.  Non compliance to this will result in your camp being given space directly opposite the trash dumpsters next year.

Shower trucks are in more than one location on site, with both hot and cold water.
There are NO PERSONAL SHOWERS allowed on site by the rules of the Parks Staff and the Event contract.
There are three shower trucks on site for showering and you may not dump water (or soapy water or food water or dish water or other leftover water) on the ground.
There are Grey Water collection points throughout the site, often near the porta-potties and/or dumpsters.

It is the policy of Kern County that there is no swimming at Buena Vista Aquatic Recreational Area outside of the permanently designated areas within the park. The only park-designated area adjacent to the Great Western War site is the Lagoon area. The park is planning to have the lagoon area filled during our event.
This area is for swimming only, no boats allowed. As per signs posted, there is no lifeguard on duty and swimming is at your own risk. Children are not allowed in the water unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.

If anyone wishes to use any sort of boat or flotation device upon the lake, you must get a permit at the official gate of Buena Vista Aquatic Recreational Area located on the opposite side of the park. Permits will not be issued through the GWW gate or with any of the Rangers. The cost and approval of the permit will be strictly between the park and the individual wishing to obtain the permit.

Anyone who is found violating the Buena Vista Aquatic Recreational Lake or Boating policies may be subject to consequences that will be determined by Kern County. This may include fines and immediate expulsion from the property.

Clarification: “Grey Water” is dish and bath water. It contains no human or animal waste – all human or animal waste (diapers, private porta-potties, etc.) must be appropriately disposed of in the restroom facilities. Do not leave it on the ground.

Grey water should be disposed of in grey water tanks only; please do not put it in the sinks or toilets in the stone privies or into the porta-privies. This can quickly fill or clog the tanks. Please do not dispose of food in gray water or restroom facilities; food scraps should be disposed of with your trash. When using the gray water tanks, please be extremely careful to avoid spilling – spills can be very difficult to clean up and can be very unsanitary. There may be no substances intentionally disposed of on the ground. Do not dig a grease pit or dishwater hole. Pour hot grease into an empty can, let it cool and then dispose of it in the trash containers. Please use the gray water tanks or white man-hole funnels for gray water only. Do not bathe in the sinks in the stone privies. Please place your food scraps in a trash bag and take the bag to a trash container. Do not leave trash on the ground for the volunteer staff to deal with.

Our contract with the park has a clause which requires us to post “No Smoking” signs in areas where we have hay bales: battlefields, archery and thrown weapons ranges, equestrian, hound coursing, food courts, etc. Please abide by the “No Smoking” signs, or we may lose the park for future wars.
